Key e-commerce figures in France important for restaurateurs

The evolution of e-commerce figures in France is unquestionably on the rise. Far from the hypotheses of a temporary evolution post covid, it is 41.8 million French people who buy on the Internet according to Médiamétrie - Observatory of Internet uses Q4 2021. A mode of consumption anchored since the confinement and with which the restaurant owners must familiarize themselves.

The conversion of the French to e-commerce

80,3 % it is a percentage which marks the spirits! It is the share of French people converted to e-commerce. Online ordering and home delivery, that's where restaurant owners must position themselves. A multi-channel strategy to reach new consumer trends. During the pandemic, deliveries and orders via the Internet have exploded, and these consumer attitudes are not going away.

Buying on mobile

22.3 million French people use cell phones to make online purchases. They prefer the mobile for a question of speed. Any merchant must adapt to this trend and therefore, make his site mobile-first. It is a question of making the site pleasant to use for the buyer, whether it is on the product sheets or on the different pages for purchasing on the phone. And thus reassure and inform the final consumer, obviously so that he validates his purchase.

Beware of the average age of e-buyers

More than 90% of e-buyers in France are between 25 and 49 years old. An average age that must be emphasized in order to avoid the stereotype: "online shopping is only for the youngest". All generations (thanks to containment) have more or less adapted to new technologies, whether via computer or mobile. For some, this consumption habit is now anchored in the daily life.

Home delivery

82% use home meal delivery services in the last 12 months according to Mediametrie. This is a sign that restaurants need to enter a hybrid business model, i.e. physical and digital. In fact, it is 1 in 5 home delivery users who order once a week in the period of May 2022. The home delivery mode satisfies 80% of the buyers. The goal for them is to avoid moving, a new style of consumption after covid to avoid crowds. It also avoids the need to travel by car, which is often complicated for people living in medium-sized cities or rural communities

This home delivery habit also highlights the most used payment methods. The bank card is the number 1 payment method, probably following the recommendations given to the population by the State during the Pandemic. It is also important to note that since the beginning of the health crisis, purchases on the Internet have been increasing and have become part of the daily life of the French.

Eco-friendly packaging for online shopping

Since January 2021, new laws are voted on the anti-waste. A notion that more and more French people take into account for their difference of purchase, but also the e-retailers for the delivery of their products. In France, 56% of e-retailers use eco-responsible packaging for their deliveries. This strategy is part of a CSR approach often expected by consumers. But also a strategy put in place to meet the various expectations and especially to democratize the circular economy.

The objective now for retailers and restaurateurs is to implement a long-term strategy. In order to use and promote their different channels to order their products and to make home delivery. Two points that are highly sought after by digital consumers.
