  • Avoid disposable plastic
  • To make consumers aware of the issue
  • Fight against waste

  • Produce better

Extract from article 81 of the law N°2020-105 of February 10, 2020

"By January 1, 2022 at the latest, the free provision of plastic toys as part of children's menus is terminated".

A law that could not be clearer on the provision of free toys. It is necessary to know the definition of a plastic toy. Does a board game made of a cardboard tray, paper cards and a plastic dice belong to the category of plastic toys? Does a small amount of plastic in a toy define it as a "plastic toy"?

Offering the plastic toy in the child menu is always a solution. You just need to highlight its price on the children's menu display and notify it on the receipt. For example: Children's menu at 10 €*, * 9,50 € for the dish + 0,50 € for the surprise toy.

The eco-responsible toy is slowly growing, however it is not yet up to the wide variety of plastic toys

Big Fast Food chains have already started to make the switch, replacing plastic toys with more environmentally friendly ones; first of all cardboard/paper toys, followed by textile and wood

But there is an important and complex issue at stake. While trying to solve an ecological problem another one appears: the saturation of the paper industry. It is thus necessary to place itself also on eco toys manufactured with another material than paper.

Several materials in evolution with this new law:

  • Propose wooden toys. The FSC and PEFC labels are a guarantee that the wood comes from a "sustainable" forest management and does not participate in deforestation. Labels that also ensure traceability and control. The objective being mainly not to harvest more than the forest produces and thus to remain once again in a circular economy.

The wood will allow to increase with time, a new range of games.

  • Adopt toys made of recycled paper. Offering toys made of recycled paper, enhances and reduces the consumption of raw materials. This second life given to materials offers a creation of new eco-designed games. Children's books are among the first choices, you can clearly decline a collection over several months. McDonald's is the perfect example of the use of books in the children's menu to replace plastic surprise toys.

  • The cardboard gamesan eco responsible solution. An easy to handle and light material. Cardboard can be used for a multitude of accessible games for all ages. Cardboard is a recyclable and recycled material for a few years now, it is totally suitable and noble for its use in games for children. To discover : The current trend is the cardboard board game. A toy for the child menu enjoyable and for all budgets.

For example Quiz My Face proposed to Buffalo Grill, an eco game made of cardboard and paper that was custom-made for this fast food giant. A game that made a splash by its originality in being made only of accessible materials.

  • A digital game. Offering a dematerialized game on the children's menu is also a strategy that works. Mini video games to download for free, movies and series to offer online, an application on the phone, several choices are available to digital

A strategic choice to make for the children's menu

Restaurant owners are positioning themselves on several levels:

  • Either, let the customers choose to subtract the toy from the child menu.
  • Or, offer an eco-responsible toy.
  • Or, to charge for the plastic toy.

Thus it is important to keep a competitive kids menu to give the choice to the child, as decisions within the family are always influenced by the youngest. This marketing object that is the surprise toy must not lose its primary function which is to occupy children and create a bond of proximity between them and your establishment.
