An iconic game format makes a comeback! To delight children's offers in CHRs, the surprise pouch is back in the Welcome Family catalog. So what is this new version, and what are the advantages of offering this type of game to children? The surprise package of our childhood
Children's surprise pouches, also known as "surprise capsules" or "mystery bags", have a long history and have become very popular among children's toys. They first became popular in the 1920s and 1930s, when children discovered little surprises hidden in cereal boxes or chewing gum packets. An early example of surprise gifts was the Cracker Jacks candy brand, which included plastic and paper toys in its bags. But also in the 1960s, Kinder Surprise eggs from Italian company Ferrero entered the market, quickly becoming popular worldwide. These chocolate eggs contain a small figurine or toy to be assembled inside.
Over the decades, surprise pouches have taken the form of a triangle tube, and the toys included in surprise pouches have evolved to include a variety of objects, such as stickers, figurines, mini-puzzles, key-rings and even trading cards. Often made of plastic, these games and toys quickly became an opportunity for toy manufacturers, who realized the commercial potential of surprise pouches. They began linking these surprises to popular franchises, such as cartoons, films or TV series. This encouraged children to collect these little objects.
Goody bags have sometimes been the subject of controversy, due to concerns about toy safety and the choking hazards associated with small objects. But they have also become increasingly rare in recent years, due to ecological concerns and the fact that they are mainly made of plastic.
