History of the International Day of Families

In the 1980s, the United Nations became more interested in family issues.

In 1983, on the recommendation of the Commission for Social Development, the Economic and Social Council adopted a resolution on the role of the family in the development process. In this resolution, it asked to promote a better knowledge of the needs and problems that a family may encounter. It also asked to put forward solutions to face them.

In 1987, the General Assembly adopted a resolution at the request of the Council and the Social Development Commission. In this resolution it asked all states to find an international year of families. It also asked to find ideas to improve the situation of families. The aim was to intensify the efforts at world level concerning progress and development in the social field.

In 1989, the General Assembly proclaimed the creation of the International Year of the Family.

In 1993, it decided that May 15 of each year would be the International Day of Families.

What is the purpose of the International Day of Families?

Ultimately, the International Day of Families is a day to raise awareness about family issues. It increases awareness of the social, economic and demographic issues that affect them.
