Yes to the changing table in the men's room!

Yes to the changing table in the men's room!

What parent has never experienced the situation of having to change their child far from the comfort and safety of their home. In these situations, public toilets are usually equipped to change children's diapers thanks to changing tables... but only for women. What about men? Don't they also have the right to take care of their children? An observation that many dads point out.

The #SquatForChange movement

It was in October 2018 that the #SquatForChange movement appeared on social networks. Donte Palmer, a young Californian dad, went to a restaurant with his wife and two children, aged 1 and 7. During the evening, he had to change the diaper of his youngest child, only problem, the restaurant was not equipped for this purpose. He decided to share this moment on Instagram to denounce this fact by creating the hashtag "SquatForChange" (Squat for change).

Mouvement Squat For Change

It then follows multiple photos of men who must change their children in the same conditions as Donte Palmer. A movement that represents the discontent of fathers, big brothers, uncles and all men who have to change their children in uncomfortable and dangerous conditions.

Towards the end of sexism in our society

Some actions to fight against this sexism are beginning to appear. In the State of New York, a first law, effective since January 1st, requires that changing tables be accessible to men. A good start in the fight against sexism in our society. However, this new law only concerns new buildings and buildings undergoing renovation of public toilets.

This law complements Barack Obama's Babies Act, which in 2016, mandated in all states, the presence of male-accessible changing tables in federal buildings.

Another example comes directly from Canada where the Tim Hortons restaurant chain decided to equip all their new restaurants with changing tables in men's restrooms.

And France in all this?

The observation is the same. Very few public establishments offer the appropriate equipment to take care of children in men's restrooms. Don't wait until there is a law that makes it mandatory to have changing tables accessible to men. Whether you are a restaurant, a hotel or any other community, equip the men's room of your establishment with a changing table. This is the first step towards ending sexism.

Not only will you show your customers that you are fighting for an important cause, but you will also offer comfort and safety to many families with young children. These are essential criteria for this type of customer. They will appreciate the attention you give them and will be delighted to return to your establishment. They will not hesitate to share your welcome with their friends in the same situation as them. You will benefit from a positive word of mouth and a good reputation among the family clientele.
